Sporting Clube today re-appointed their former coach Mr. Vishwas Gaonkar as the Head Coach of the first team. Mr. Gaonkar replaces foreign coach Mr. Roy Barreto under whom the Club found themselves floundering at the botton of the I-League table at he break, after the first seven rounds.
Under Coach Vishwas, during his first stint at the club last year, the team had led the I- league table for a major part of the season. Nine months ago Vishwas had to be replaced by Coach Clifford Chukwuma because the club felt, that, although the wins were coming, the quality of football the club was famous for, was being sacrificed.
Now, given the situation that the club found itself in, without a win after seven rounds, a calculated decision has been taken to stem the rot by bringing back Coach Vishwas Gaonkar.
Vishwas Gaonkar comes to Sporting with years of football experience both as player and coach. He was a former Sesa Goa, Vasco and Salgaocar defender before he took up coaching after doing the NIS football course at Patiala. He then was chief coach of the Sesa Goa football team till 1999. After the Sesa Goa football team was disbanded in1999, he helped set up the Sesa Football Academy and was its chief coach for 8 years before joining Sporting as its technical director in season 2007-08, followed by the coach's job at Sporting last season.
