Sporting Clube win U-19 I-League

PANAJI: After their seniors barely escaped the drop from the I-League , the under-19 team of Sporting Clube de Goa redeemed some pride for the Goan club by winning the I-League for under-19 teams.

Braving a partisan Kolkata crowd, Sporting Clube held their nerves in the penalty shootout to beat favourites East Bengal 4-2 in their own backyard after regulation time finished goalless. With this win, Sporting also became the first Goan club to win the prestigious youth championship.

In the tie-breaker, Sporting boys remained calm to slot all four of their tries through Pritam Singh, Pedro Gonslaves, Reliston Fernandes and Joston Pereira. But the Sporting keeper Koushik Ghosh turned his team’s hero when he brilliantly saved one attempt by East Bengal, and another shot by the hosts went wide to give Sporting their maiden under-19 national championship.
